  April 26, 2001:

The checkup went great! We got to see the baby on the ultrasound. He or she was kicking so much with both legs it looked like he or she was going to do a backwards summersault! You could even see the back bend. It was so amazing!

We got a 3 pictures from the ultrasound itself and also James videotaped the whole thing on our new Sony Digital8 camera. He didn't do an excellent job because 1) it was his first time videoing with it and 2) he was trying to look at the ultrasound himself! :)

I was a bit disappointed that the picture they gave me (3 duplicates of the same one and one of those was squashed to show the heartbeat being measured) only showed the head and body. If you look closely, you'll see the legs are crossed, but they are very faint. The profile looks great. I could make out a darker area for a mouth, a bump of a nose and a darker area for the eye. I teased James about the baby having his nose. :)

Here's the picture:

To me, it's pretty obvious what's what because I saw the little guy/gal on the screen moving around. But I know to a lot of other people (because of past experience seeing others' picture) it just looks like a blob. The baby's head is on the right facing up and the faint looking legs are on the left.

They said a lot of good things. The sac had plenty of fluid and that is good for the baby's kidneys. They also told me the gestational age which was 12 wks and 3 days. That puts me just a few days behind what I thought going by the February conception date.

They also confirmed then that I did indeed have an early miscarraige in January, which is what we suspected from the beginning.

The u/s tech also said that my placenta was a bit low and suggested that we check it in 8 wks. My midwife said that it was still within normal limits and she was not concerned. Neither of us plans on another u/s. As much as I'd like to see the baby again, cost wise it would be better for us. Plus we don't want to know the sex until he/she is born so there is no risk of finding that out sooner.

Speaking of the sex, I found it interesting that James wants a girl and I want a boy. He recently told me that he wants to feel protective and nurturing to a little girl. It sort of shocked me when he said that. I thought that most men wanted a boy to throw the ball around with or to roughhouse with. I learn something new everyday!

Next week I start my new job at the library. I've only been doing the 4 hours of cleaning (or rather 1-2 hours cleaning and 2-3 hours of misc. work) one day a week. Next week I start working 20 hours per week. 4 cleaning and 16 on the summer reading program. I already have one person who said they would come and present a story, I just have to schedule a time with her. It's going to be hard work, but I think I'll enjoy it.

Then, the week after I start that, we go on vacation to ORLANDO! I can't wait! So, since May is going to be a busy week with all that, I plan to get started on the new story and finish the first draft before I work next week. Should be easy, I've got the whole weekend and Monday too!

TTFN!
