After losing his wife and daughter to the fever, Amos Rackley falls into a depression. During this time he didn't work at all. Once all the food and money were gone, Amos stole from the local general store. He serves sometime in jail, the kind store owner being a friend and letting him off easy. Amos decides to head west to start a new life for himself. Heading out with very few possesions and one trusty old mule, he soon discovers a young child lying on the side of the road. He nurses her back to health and begins to feel a closeness to the young girl as she reminds him of his own daughter. He believes her when she says that both of her parents are dead and rashly decides to take her west with him.
What does God have in store for Amos and Cassie? Can Cassie escape her past and the devious father she left behind?
